PLAYLIST: Skype Therapy with a Skype Therapist

Welcome. My name is Peter Strong and I am a professional online therapist. I offer therapy over Skype for working with anxiety, for helping you overcome depression or for helping you recover from an addiction.

Therapy over Skype is becoming very popular and it's very effective, especially if you are suffering from anxiety. Most of my clients who come to me seeking therapy over Skype are struggling with anxiety in one form or another. This could range from Generalized Anxiety Disorder to Driving Anxiety or it could be Social Anxiety or it could be something quite severe such as Agoraphobia.

Therapy over Skype is very effective for anxiety. It is also effective for depression as well, where we way to explore the underlying process that causes that depression. The style of psychotherapy that I offer online is called Mindfulness Therapy, and the whole focus here is to look at that underlying process.

Talking about depression or anxiety is not enough. It may produce some immediate relief from symptoms but it does not change that underlying process. So talk therapy in the usual sense, or counseling, by itself is not going to be enough to help you break free from anxiety or depression or addiction.

We must look at this underlying process itself and there are several different levels of the underlying processes that causes anxiety and depression and other forms of emotional suffering. Perhaps the most common is Habitual Reactive Thinking. These are patterns of reactive thoughts that repeat themselves over and over again, that seem to dominate the mind, that we just can't seem to break free from.

Changing these patterns of reactive thinking is central to mindfulness work in general and during these online therapy sessions over Skype, we work on helping you learn new methods to actually do this, to break free from reactive thinking.

It's actually much easier than you might think. Reactive thinking is by it's nature habitual and the thing about any habit is that it thrives on not being seen, on a level of unconsciousness. It operates like it was on auto-pilot; that's the nature of habit. It requires that we do not see the mechanism at work.

But, mindfulness is all about developing conscious awareness, becoming more and more conscious of these habits. Basically, when you begin to illuminate the habit with consciousness it starts to lose it's strength and power.

So, that is a very important part of mindfulness, we actually develop more conscious awareness of our emotional habits and of our cognitive habits and we start to develop a very different kind of relationship with our emotions - a relationship that is based on consciousness and also on friendliness. These are the two greatest powers that you have available to you for breaking free from reactive emotional habits: Consciousness and Friendliness. The more you are able to surround your emotions with conscious friendliness the quicker they change and the quicker they heal.

So, this is a very important feature of Mindfulness Therapy. Mindfulness is not just about becoming more aware, it's also about developing more compassionate and friendly attitudes toward your emotions and toward your thoughts as well. And, this includes the negative thoughts. If you try to fight negative thoughts you simply strengthen them. If you try to avoid them they also simply persist and return. But once you start to surround negative thoughts or emotions with friendly consciousness then everything begins to change. So this is one of the methods that I will be teaching you during our Skype sessions together.
